Startups in New York serve the most demanding customers on the planet. The customers here are banks founded before Singapore was, hospital systems employing tens of thousands, retailers, landlords, television networks. A company here has to convince someone who has run a profitable business for decades and has seen a hundred demos this year. That is a harder sale, and watching people make it is worth more than watching a launch go well.
The work changes underneath you. It's common to spend a year at a startup and be moved into a new role every few months as the company grows. You take entrepreneurship classes at Columbia, while working in a startup in one of the economic hearts of the planet.
New York sits an hour from more universities than anywhere else. One NOC student spent the year working full time and still won hackathons at Harvard, Carnegie Mellon and Rutgers. Nobody arranged that for him. He got on a train.

Your academic home for the year has since 1754 turned out FM radio, the laser, the nuclear magnetic resonance work that made MRI scanners possible, among many others. That is your academic home for the year.
