A year at NOC counts in full toward your degree. You earn the same units you would on campus, through the course of your internship and entrepreneurship courses (depending on your college).

General

A startup internship abroad and classes at top universities.

The NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) internship places selected NUS students inside startups across more than 15 locations, including Silicon Valley, New York, Toronto-Waterloo, Shanghai, Beijing, the Greater Bay Area, Stockholm, Munich, Nagoya, Singapore, and Southeast Asia (Indonesia and Vietnam). Students intern full-time at high-growth startups in the world's leading hubs, while taking classes at universities like Stanford, the University of Toronto, and Peking University.

Students selected for the programme will do internships at innovative start-ups in the world's leading entrepreneurial hubs. At the same time, they will be taking classes at reputable and prestigious universities — Stanford University, University of Toronto, Fudan University, Peking University, South China University of Technology (SCUT), Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Universitas Indonesia, Vietnam National University-HCMC International University, Technical University of Munich, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and others.

NOC curriculum structure

Our curriculum is built from two kinds of courses.

NOC runs for 12 months and consists of two parts. The internship, and entrepreneurship courses that run alongside them. Together they lead up to 40 earned units, a full year toward your degree.

Faculty notes

College of Design and Engineering (CDE) / School of Computing (SoC)

If you study at CDE or SoC, you can apply to count your NOC internship courses toward your major requirements, as long as the internship is relevant to your major. The internship has to involve real technical work, design, research, development, or experimentation, and an assessment of whether a product or idea is viable. Your faculty or department gives the approval, and this applies to internships from NOC AY2014/15 Sem 2 onwards.

Universal credit mapping

Fulfilling degree requirements with NOC credits.

For students admitted from AY2015/16 onwards, NOC courses can fulfil either Programme Requirements or Unrestricted Elective (UE) requirements. Mapping or substitution of any NUS course with another course taken under NOC must be submitted to the respective faculty for consideration and approval.

Preclusions

Some courses overlap, in which case they can only count once.

Students who have taken a specific TR/BSN/BSP course at BIZ prior to joining NOC may be precluded from taking the equivalent course under the NOC programme. As part of the NOC requirements however, students are required to take at least one entrepreneurship course (refer to individual college curriculum for details on compulsory courses). If students have taken any of the compulsory TR/ETP courses under NOC requirements, check back with NOC for the latest preclusions requirements.

Conditions

A few conditions to remember.

Internship Outcome

Only students with an internship and approved visa/residence permit may leave for the NOC programme. Those who don’t depart before the NUS semester starts must attend classes until their visa is issued and departure confirmed. They should drop courses once their departure date is set.

Engineering Scholars Programme (E-Scholar)

Engineering Scholars Programme (E-Scholar) will be enrolled in one of the 6-month NUS Overseas College Programmes (NOC). The NOC programme is designed to provide international industry exposure to students.

Students on the NOC programme are not allowed to enrol in NUS courses which are not part of the NOC curriculum, regardless of whether physical attendance is required.

Internship Courses

Internship is the focal area of NOC curriculum structure. The 16 Units obtained under internship can be used to fulfil any of the 2 types of degree requirements: Program Requirements or Unrestricted Elective (UE) Courses. The faculty/school/department has sole discretion, subject to any University requirements, in approving the use of the 16 Units, in whole or in part, to fulfil these requirements.

College of Design and Engineering (CDE) / School of Computing (SoC) students undertaking relevant NOC internships may use TR3202S/ETP3201S to fulfil Industrial Attachment. Students are to check with their faculty/department for updated mapping approval.

Entrepreneurship Courses

Complementing the internship are entrepreneurship courses designed to equip students with the requisite knowledge and skills for their internship work. NOC students will take up the compulsory entrepreneurship courses, unless preclusions apply.
